Fossil Mold: Make Fossil Countertops with Remodel Resin

See video

Fossil stone is some of the most expensive natural stone ever installed in a kitchen, often running hundreds to thousands of dollars per square foot. This mold lets you get that look for a fraction of the cost.

Mike designed this mold from his favorite fossil shapes, the same ones he saw in the fossil stone he installed as a natural stone tradesman. It’s poured from heat-resistant platinum silicone, so it holds fine detail and releases cleanly pour after pour.

How it works

  • Mix Resin Rock (2:1 ratio, 2 minutes with a drill) and tint with True Tint at one drop per ounce.
  • Fill the cavities, scrape them flush with a flex spreader, and torch out any air.
  • Demold and you have a set of realistic fossils ready to embed.

Pro tips for the most realistic look

  • Place them face down in your wet countertop pour. When you sand them flush, the detailed side is revealed, and the color settles into every ridge.
  • Less is more. About one fossil per square foot looks natural. Clusters and random placement read like real stone, while rows and uniform spacing look fake.
  • Match your recipe. Tint your fossils to complement your countertop, such as white and black fossils in a White Granite pour, so people see stone first and fossils second.
  • Give it 48 hours before sanding them flush. Start with 80 grit over the fossils, then follow your normal grit progression.

Use it for countertops, tabletops, bar tops, vanities, or gallery-worthy art pieces. This is functional art your guests will be hunting through like a game of Where’s Waldo.
